San Francisco 49ers: 5 Reasons Why the 49ers Are True Contenders

Richard Sherman

John Lynch shocked the league when he brought in Richard Sherman for a visit, and then signed him. The longtime Seahawk destroyed the 49ers playoff hopes before, making it weird to see him in the red and gold, but I’m sure 49ers fans are okay with it. He is one of the best zone coverage corners in the game, even if his play is not what it once was. Sherman is the leader of this defense and the lockdown corner this team needed.

Richard Sherman lacks the athletic profile that many elite corners possess, but he makes up for it with his intelligence, deceitfulness, and ball skills. He effectively shuts down his side of the field and punishes the passer who dares to throw towards him. A tip-drill specialist, Sherman makes plays, even if he doesn’t have the dynamic skillset others have. He is a prime candidate to mentor and to mold a young secondary, elevating it to new heights. Whatever his role is, Sherman’s impact will be felt.

Why This Helps Them Contend

Richard Sherman inherently improves the play of practically everyone on the defense by making their job easier. Locking down his side of the field is sure to spur growth in the young talents the 49ers possess. This doesn’t even account for the intangible gifts Sherman delivers as a veteran. Comparable to Reshad Jones leading a young Dolphins defense, their roles will be magnified, but it will pay off when the young kids develop. If the 49ers defense develops in time for the playoffs, watch out.
