San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy put forth another impressive performance in his team’s win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, and afterward, offensive lineman Trent Williams took the opportunity to fire back at Purdy’s critics.
“I don’t get why people say he’s a system quarterback,” Williams said via David Bonilla of 49ers Web Zone. “No system quarterback makes tight-window throws before they’re there, throwing people open, putting the ball into a window and trusting his receiver to get there, layering balls over linebackers who are in good position, and still getting the ball over their head, getting it to the playmaker.”
Purdy went 19-for-27 with 368 yards, a couple of touchdowns and an interception in the 28-16 victory.
“(He’s) just so accurate,” continued Williams. “You watch a lot of his throws, the accuracy gives them guys a chance to run after the catch, and I don’t think he gets enough credit for that.”
Many fans and media pundits have been saying that Purdy is merely a product of Kyle Shanahan’s offensive system, likening him to former 49ers signal-caller Jimmy Garoppolo. The fact that Purdy had a string of three poor performances with both Williams and wide receiver Deebo Samuel sidelined earlier this season only added more fuel to the fire for his critics.
However, since then, Purdy has led San Francisco to five straight wins and has totaled 13 touchdowns and a pair of picks during that span.
On the season overall, the 23-year-old has thrown for 3,553 yards, 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing a league-high 70.2 percent of his passes and posting an NFL-best 116.9 passer rating.
Brock Purdy was selected by the Niners with the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft and was pressed into starting duty after season-ending injuries to both Garoppolo and Trey Lance. Since then, he has established himself as the 49ers’ quarterback of the future.
San Francisco is 10-3 and will take on the Arizona Cardinals next weekend.
