Wilson Will Lead NFL in Touchdown Passes

Russell Wilson is like Cameron’s dad’s Ferrari in Ferris Bueller. Rare, gifted, special, and yet all that talent just sits around in the garage only to be appreciated but never used properly.

Yes, despite having one of the three best quarterbacks in the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks were still very much a “run the ball in every possible situation” type of offense, having more rushing attempts than all but two teams. And yet, Russell Wilson’s numbers remain some of the best in the NFL, which proves one thing if nothing else. Wilson doesn’t need many attempts to do major damage.

In fact, despite being stuck in a run-heavy offense, Wilson ranked sixth in the NFL in passing yards, and even more impressively, third in passing touchdowns with 31. But expect those touchdown numbers to climb to pole position come 2020.

Wilson only finished five touchdowns away from first place anyway, but the two names ahead of him are bound to slip. Number one on that list, Lamar Jackson, played at what could officially be called a “ludicrously efficient” pace. For as good as he is, he’s bound for regression. Speaking of regression, number two on the passing touchdown list is Jameis Winston. And if the Saints are lucky, they won’t have to see him throw a pass in 2020.

That leaves Russell Wilson, who led the NFL in passing touchdowns no more than two seasons ago at 34 touchdowns; and threw for 35 in 2018 on nearly 100 fewer passing attempts. Meaning, for as absolutely spectacularly great as Wilson was in 2019, he actually suffered some touchdown regression.

But with his offense gaining the help of Greg Olsen, Phillip Dorsett, and a more experienced DK Metcalf, Russell Wilson has the tools to not only get back on pace– but exceed that pace as well.
