No. 3: That Offensive Line Is Bad… Like, Really Bad
In fairness to the Seahawks blockers up front, they’ve had to face two elite pass-rushers in back-to-back weeks, the Broncos’ Von Miller and the Bears’ Khalil Mack. And both have victimized right tackle Germain Ifedi with regularity. And life won’t get much easier in Week 3 when Seattle hosts EDGE Demarcus Lawrence and the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3.
Russell Wilson has already been sacked a league-leading 12 times on the young season.
OK, that’s a narrative Seattle fans have grown used to in recent years. Wilson takes a lot of sacks, and the offensive line bears a portion of the blame. But the compounding problems surrounding Wilson and the offense, combined with the defensive woes, have exposed this issue to an even greater extent.
According to Pro Football Focus, pass protection hasn’t totally been Seattle’s O-line’s biggest weakness. This unit is ranked No. 16 over two weeks, and a good chunk of Wilson’s sacks taken are the result of him either holding onto the ball too long or not evading pressure and extending plays.
The bigger problem, especially when trying to figure out how to get Rashaad Penny involved, is seeing how PFF ranked this same unit dead last in run support.
So, to help Penny and the run game get going, thereby alleviating the defense, the O-line needs massive improvement. But the early results haven’t been good at all, meaning those fixes aren’t likely to come anytime soon.
As a result, the O-line woes could wind up being the No. 1 problem influencing the rest of the Seahawks’ woes in 2018.
