Olsen assists in solving Seattle’s fumble and drop problem
The Seattle Seahawks were brilliant as usual during their 11-5 season in 2019. But in an rough-and-tumble NFC where even that wasn’t enough to garner. It’s safe to say the Seahawks left points and wins on the table, in large part because of both fumbles and drops.
The Seahawks fumbled 1.6 times per game, a number only the Vikings, Giants, and Eagles surpassed. And no team in the NFL lost more fumbles after a catch than Seattle’s six. Greg Olsen may be past the point of being past his prime, but that’s one statistic he’s more than capable of helping.
Olsen produced just a 3.7 drop rate last season, and per Pro Football Focus, has only lost grip on four passes over the last four seasons. To find his last fumble, one has to go all the way back to the year 2015, and even that one was more a representation of the NFL’s awkward catch rule.
As far as how Olsen brings that towards run blocking and helping Chris Carson, a Pro Bowl caliber back who fumbled in nearly every other game, that remains a question. Even dating back to Chicago and Carolina, Olsen hasn’t been very impressive from that realm. But there’s reason to believe he’ll certainly help as a pass catcher.
