Seahawks’ Pete Carroll Reveals When He Would Bench Geno Smith

The Seattle Seahawks had a long plane right back home after their game against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 9. They were dominated right from the opening whistle, embarrassingly losing the game, 37-3.

The Seahawks managed only 153 yards of total offense in the game, while their defense allowed 515. It was easily the worst game of the season for Seattle, who will be looking to bounce back in Week 10 against the Washington Commanders.

Following a performance like that, it should come as no surprise that everything on the roster was being evaluated. Head coach Pete Carroll should be looking to shake things up as nothing clicked against the Ravens.

One of the players who some fans are beginning to get frustrated with is Geno Smith. The calls of Drew Lock to replace him as the starter are getting louder and Sunday’s performance isn’t going to help that.

What will it take for the Seahawks head coach to make that kind of move? He revealed the answer during an appearance on Seattle Sports’ “Brock and Salk” saying it should be obvious when a change is needed.

“It should be an obvious situation that a guy’s not doing his part, and you have to declare where the issues are,” Carroll said during the November 6, 2023, interview. “Is it with the guys up front not being consistent? Are we not doing our route stuff right? Are we not calling the game for him?

“We have to call all the games for the quarterback. They’re the key, and we have to make sure we’re doing our part there. So, there’s a lot of aspects of that.” (H/T Heavy)

Smith signed a three-year, $75 million contract in the offseason after a stellar 2022 campaign, in which he helped lead the Seahawks to the playoffs. At 5-3 and in first place in the NFC West, it is hard to imagine that Carroll is looking to make that drastic of a change right now.

However, that could change if the team puts up another dud similar to what occurred against the Ravens. The next few weeks are going to be very important for Smith, as the Seahawks will be evaluating whether or not a change needs to be made at quarterback, as his three-year deal has zero guaranteed dollars after the 2023 season.
