Seahawks Predicted To Sign Intriguing Running Back

The Seattle Seahawks have a great foundation to build upon heading into the 2023 off-season. After shocking everyone with their performance during the 2022 season, they are now in a position to upgrade the roster and push closer to the top of the NFC next season.

A lot of their time this offseason should be focused on improving the defense. Seattle could use one more pass rusher to go with the young emerging players they have. That would benefit the secondary as well, as an improved pass rush makes life easier for everyone on that side of the ball.

Armed with four picks in the first two rounds of the 2023 NFL Draft, courtesy of the Denver Broncos from the Russell Wilson trade, it would not be surprising if a lot of the attention is on defense with those picks. If the Seahawks can bolster that unit and get it performing near the level of the offense, they are going to be tough to beat.

The offensive performance in 2022 came out of nowhere. Everyone counted out Geno Smith, who responded with a Pro Bowl season and took home Comeback Player of the Year. With all of the key weapons returning, the Seahawks should once again be productive on that side of the ball.

However, adding a few pieces here and there certainly wouldn’t hurt. Finding a complementary running back to Kenneth Walker III could be in the cards for Seattle. One player who would fit the bill in that regard is David Montgomery.

Montgomery doesn’t offer the explosiveness that Walker does as a ball carrier as he averages an underwhelming 3.9 yards per carry in his career with the Chicago Bears. Where Montgomery would help the Seahawks the most is in the passing game.

Walker isn’t a highly regarded running back in the passing game. He caught only 19 passes during his collegiate career and had 27 as a rookie. Montgomery has had at least 25 receptions in every season as a professional and it isn’t only on dump-offs. Seattle could get creative and use him in different spots in the formation as a pass catcher.

In addition to his receiving skills, Montgomery is excellent in pass protection. His 71.7 PFF grade over his first four seasons laps Walker, who had a pass-blocking grade of 32 as a rookie. While Montgomery ranks in the top 10, Walker was 54th out of 59 qualifying running backs.

Adding a player of Montgomery’s caliber to the offense would help diversify their offense and the skill sets of their running backs. Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron would have the ability to get really creative with personnel as Montgomery would be a nice upgrade on Travis Homer, DeeJay Dallas and Tony Jones, the Seattle backups from last season.
