The Seattle Seahawks had a rough 2021 season, finishing in last place in the NFC West with a record of 7-10. The only benefit to having a losing season is that you get to select higher in the NFL Draft, but the Seahawks do not even have that luxury. Their first-round pick is owned by the New York Jets, who acquired it in the Jamal Adams trade in July of 2020.

Despite that, the Seahawks are a team that is closer to being playoff contenders again than some people may realize. They lost five games last season by one score and Russell Wilson was hampered by injuries, missing three games in total.

A little bit of better luck and the Seahawks may have been a Wild Card team in 2021. Alas, you are what your record says you are at the end of the day and Seattle has to make some upgrades to the roster.

First and foremost, they need to convince Wilson that Seattle is where he should stay. If Wilson looks to be traded, their entire game plan this offseason will change. But, if he is in the fold, the Seahawks are in a position to upgrade the roster to make a postseason run in 2022.

One position that CBS Sports believes the Seahawks will upgrade this offseason is at tight end. They are projecting Zach Ertz to sign in Seattle, agreeing to a two-year deal worth $18 million.

Last season, the Seahawks used Gerald Everett as their starting tight end. He was solid, catching 48 passes for 478 yards and four touchdowns in 15 games. All three statistics were third on the team behind D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.

Ertz, however, would be a sizable upgrade for the Seattle offense. They saw first hand that when healthy, he has plenty of juice left. In two games against the Seahawks last season after being acquired by the Arizona Cardinals, Ertz caught 15 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns.

The Seahawks would love to add a player capable of performing at that level to their offense. Ertz would help take away some of the attention that Metcalf and Lockett draw, as the team has failed to develop a consistent third option behind them in the passing game.

We have seen Wilson succeed with tight ends in the past that aren’t nearly as talented as Ertz. Will Dissly, Nick Vannett and Jacob Hollister come to mind from recent seasons, in addition to Everett. Bringing Ertz into the mix would help elevate this offense to another level as a go-to option in the middle of the field outside of Metcalf and Lockett.
