Seahawks Urged To Pursue Reunion With Star Free Agent Pass Rusher

The Seattle Seahawks have a pretty solid pass rush, as they totaled 47 sacks this past season. However, you can never have enough edge rushers.

That’s why Jared Dubin of CBS Sports thinks the Seahawks should pursue a reunion with Jadeveon Clowney, who played for the team back in 2019.

Seattle fans would probably prefer to forget Clowney’s short stint in the Pacific Northwest, as he logged just 31 tackles and three sacks in 13 games that season. Yes, he did add an interception, four forced fumbles, a couple of fumble recoveries and a pair of defensive touchdowns, but the Seahawks brought Clowney aboard to get to the quarterback, and he didn’t do that consistently.

Most recently, however, Clowney flashed his pass-rushing skills with the Baltimore Ravens, racking up 43 tackles, 9.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and five passes defended this past season.

The 31-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of South Carolina, was originally selected by the Houston Texans with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Overall, Clowney’s career has actually been pretty disappointing, as he has never logged double-digit sacks and has bounced around quite a bit.

However, he has managed to be productive throughout most of his NFL tenure, making three straight Pro Bowl appearances between 2016 and 2018 and posting at least nine sacks four times in 10 seasons.

Given his age and his somewhat checkered injury history, Clowney can probably be had on a one-year deal, and the Seahawks have plenty of cap room to absorb him.

Whether or not Seattle would actually be interested in a reunion is anyone’s guess, but the Seahawks only seem to be a couple of pieces away from being a playoff team, so it would make sense.
