Bobby Wagner, Linebacker
Seattle’s defense didn’t record any takeaways on Sunday, but it did perform well enough to keep the Seahawks in the game. Linebacker Bobby Wagner was the biggest standout for Seattle, recording a game-high 13 tackles (10 solo).
That’s now back-to-back 13-tackle outings for the seventh-year pro, who has 65 tackles (40 solo) on the season. And despite the fact that the Seahawks are missing the likes of the now-departed Richard Sherman and the injured Earl Thomas, they still boast one of the best defensive units in the NFL.
The Seahawks are currently seventh in passing yards allowed per game (228.3). They’re also seventh in takeaways with 16 (10 interceptions, six fumble recoveries). Additionally, they are ninth in opponents’ points per game (21.3).
The 28-year-old Wagner remains the leader of Seattle’s defense, as he told NFL.com in an article published Tuesday:
“I’ve always believed the middle linebacker was the guy who ran the show. As soon as they let me start calling the plays (as a rookie), I felt like this was my defense. We had a bunch of great leaders around here, and I was the person in the middle trying to control everything. But I never looked at it like, when those guys left, this was mine now. I saw it as just being my turn to maintain the level we’ve had over the last few years.”
Moving forward, the Seahawks will look for more strong play from their star linebacker.
