Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith has missed the last two games due to a groin injury, but head coach Pete Carroll says that we can expect him back soon.

Carroll told reporters on Tuesday that Smith will practice all week and will take the field when the Seahawks battle the Tennessee Titans in a pivotal matchup next Sunday.

He went on to say that Smith may have been able to play in Monday night’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles but that the team made the right decision to push him back another week.

“He might have done great, but at least we bought him another week and now he’s ready to go. He’ll have a full week of prep,” Carroll said, via Brandon Gustafson of SeattleSports.com.

Seattle was able to pick up a critical win over the Eagles thanks to a terrific performance from Drew Lock, who was playing quarterback in Smith’s stead. Lock led a 10-play, 92-yard drive capped by a 29-yard touchdown pass from Lock to Jaxon Smith-Njigba with 28 seconds remaining that gave the Seahawks a 20-17 victory.

Smith has thrown for 2,918 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 64.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 89.1 this season.

The 33-year-old, who played his collegiate football at West Virginia, was originally selected by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

He spent the first four years of his career with the Jets and was a big disappointment with the club, totaling 28 touchdowns and 36 picks in 33 games and 30 starts. Smith then spent one season with the New York Giants and one campaign with the Los Angeles Chargers before joining Seattle in 2019.

Geno Smith served as Russell Wilson’s backup his first three seasons with the Seahawks before taking over as the starter following Wilson’s trade in 2022. He ended up having a breakout year, making the Pro Bowl after registering 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also led the NFL in completion percentage (69.8 percent).

Seattle is 7-7 and is still in the hunt for a Wild Card spot in the NFC.
