Shaq Barrett agrees to deal to return to Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are fresh off of winning the Super Bowl and are hoping to retain as many free agents as they can. Chris Godwin received the franchise tag and Lavonte Davis was brought back. Now, the team has been able to reach an agreement to re-sign Shaq Barrett.

According to a report from Josina Anderson of ESPN, Barrett has agreed to a new deal to stay with the Buccaneers.

Keeping Barrett was a major priority for the Buccaneers. However, many were worried that he would end up leaving for more money. Obviously, loyalty was a big thing for Barrett and he quickly came to an agreement on a new deal.

During the 2020 season with the Buccaneers, Barrett ended up recording 57 total tackles to go along with eight sacks, two forced fumbles, and three defended passes. He was a force to be reckoned with and wreaked havoc on opposing offensive lines and quarterbacks.

It will be interesting to see what else the Buccaneers do this offseason. Barrett getting a deal done this quickly allows them to shift their focus to adding pieces around their core.

At this point in time, no numbers have been reported on Shaq Barrett’s new deal with the Buccaneers. More than likely, it’s a multi-year deal worth a good amount of money. But it also seems likely that he may have taken a discount to remain with Tampa Bay.

Expect to see the Buccaneers remain active this offseason. They still have Antonio Brown and Rob Gronkowski to re-sign. Tampa Bay certainly isn’t done, but this is a big step in the right direction.
