The Chicago Bears are 1-1, but after so much hype this past offseason, one could easily argue that it feels like the team is 0-2.
It is clear that Caleb Williams has been struggling, but how much?
One NFL analyst has put the entire two-week struggle into perspective.
Writing in an article for Bleacher Report, NFL analyst Brad Gagnon claimed the team was averaging 3.0 yards per play on offense.
With every offense mathematically needing at least 3.34 yards per play to get a first down in three plays, the Bears are averaging a three-and-out on offense. Here’s what Gagnon had to say.
“This Bears team was supposed to be on the rise with Williams, fellow top-10 rookie Rome Odunze and plenty of added support this season, but Williams has hardly showed up and Odunze has caught just three of the nine passes thrown his way,” he wrote.
The Bears also rank with the Carolina Panthers as two of the least effective offenses in the NFL so far this season across various statistical categories. Bryce Young’s benching proves at least one example that teams may not stand for Williams’ level of struggle forever.
Of course, Williams has completed two starts and Young is in his second season. That said, if the Bears keep at this level, the pressure level for a similar move may rise. Still, he has time to grow.
Chicago Bears’ defense forced to pick up the slack
As Williams settles in, it falls on the Bears defense to pick up the slack. Luckily, the team has placed a unit to complement the quarterback. While many had claimed that Williams’ biggest support would be Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, Rome Odunze, and D’Andre Swift, the defense has been the one to step up.
According to ESPN, the Chicago Bears’ defense ranks sixth in points allowed per game. This has set the bar relatively low for Williams. However, as the Denver Broncos have proved year after year with their various quarterbacks, defenses will unravel if the offense doesn’t pick up throughout the course of the season.
