Should The Raiders Consider A Potential Derek Carr Trade?

Derek Carr and the Las Vegas Raiders had a roller-coaster season in 2021. They started the season off 3-0 and had a 5-2 record heading into their bye week. They looked well on their way to challenging for a playoff spot before things began unraveling.

Head coach Jon Gruden resigned after some of his emails leaked during the investigation into the Washington Football Team. Wide receiver Henry Ruggs III, who was breaking out, was involved in a deadly car crash and subsequently released. Fellow 2020 first-round pick, Damon Arnette, was also released following a video emerging of him brandishing guns and offering up death threats.

That began a skid, as the Raiders record fell to 6-7. The playoffs looked like a long shot, but Las Vegas ended the season on a roll, winning their last four contests to qualify for the postseason.

While it was disappointing to lose in the Wild Card game to the Cincinnati Bengals, given what the team faced, it was quite an accomplishment to even make the playoffs. One of the reasons they were able to get there was quarterback Derek Carr.

Carr was able to keep the team together despite the adversity they faced. He should be lauded for all he handled and has dealt with during his tenure with the Raiders. But, is this offseason the team should consider parting ways with Carr?

The first question you have to ask when discussing teams changing starters is who will be replacing them? Some veteran options could be available that might pique the Raiders’ interest, such as Russell Wilson, who had Las Vegas on his list of preferred teams should he request a trade from the Seattle Seahawks.

Some teams could call the Raiders to gauge their interest in moving Carr. While he likely isn’t an elite quarterback, he is more than capable of getting the job done and can control the offense.

At this point in time, it is likely better that the Raiders hold onto Carr. Some people may want to move on from him following his performance against the Bengals, but that could be a short-sighted move.

Derek Carr has been a rock for the organization to rely on. Unless there is a full overhaul of the coaching staff and front office, Carr should remain under center for the Raiders in 2022. Unless the Raiders can land a definitive upgrade in the form of Wilson or a player such as Deshaun Watson, there is no reason for them to want to move Carr.
