Chris Wormley
The Steelers watched Javon Hargrave sign a three-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles and knew that they would need to replace him on the defensive line. While he doesn’t exactly fit the bill of a tackle, the Steelers traded for Chris Wormley from the Baltimore Ravens.
Wormley plays more on the edge than Hargrave did, who was a true nose tackle. On paper, it looks like Wormley might have been brought in simply to back up Stephon Tuitt and Cam Heyward. But Wormley has experience playing in the tackle position with the Ravens.
It will be interesting to see how Steelers’ DC Keith Butler utilizes Wormley this season. Last season in Baltimore, Wormley racked up 50 total tackles, but only 1.5 sacks. Despite his athleticism, his production in his first three years in the league hasn’t been outstanding. However, something was intriguing enough for the Steelers to trade for him from a division rival.
It remains to be seen how Wormley will be used but he provides a bit more depth for the Steelers’ defense and could be used in different packages.
