Steelers listed as potential landing spot for Jameis Winston in free agency

Jameis Winston is going to be one of the most intriguing free agents to keep an eye on this offseason. While some think he will end up back with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, others think Bruce Arians is done with him and wants an upgrade. That could leave him available for an intriguing team.

The Athletic has predicted that Winston will end up signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers. That prediction would make him the heir apparent, or maybe the starter ahead of Ben Roethlisberger.

On one hand, Mike Tomlin’s head may explode just at the thought of adding a 30-INT quarterback. On the other hand, we saw how the Steelers backups performed last season, and Ben Roethlisberger will be 38 at the start of next season. Winston can back up Roethlisberger for a year, try to build up his value and enter the market again in 2021.

Obviously, the Steelers would be bringing Winston in with the thought of him backing up Roethlisberger. However, if Roethlisberger struggles or Winston impresses in training camp and the preseason, a starting job could be available.

Last season with the Buccaneers, Winston did end up throwing 30 interceptions. That number is completely unacceptable for an NFL quarterback. Despite the 30 interceptions, Winston also completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns.

Along with the bad, there is a whole lot of good. Winston has an elite arm, he just needs to make the right decisions moving forward.

If the 26-year-old quarterback can get the mental side of the game down, he could end up being a legitimate superstar. Signing with a team like the Steelers could help him reach that potential. Mike Tomlin is a great head coach and the Steelers have always developed players well.

Pittsburgh will be an interesting team to keep an eye on this offseason. They don’t have to make a move for a quarterback, but taking a chance on a guy like Winston might be what they need to remain competitive long-term.
