Steelers Receiving Heavy Trade Interest In No. 32 Pick

These are not your father’s Pittsburgh Steelers. With Omar Khan now overseeing the front office as general manager, taking over for long-time front office member Kevin Colbert, the Steelers have become a more aggressive team.

Khan’s impact has been felt in free agency as Pittsburgh has adjusted its game plan. Forever, the Steelers were a team that focused on drafting and developing players, rarely dipping into free agency. But things have changed with Khan, who filled a few gaps in the roster early with veteran additions.

The change in philosophy was also felt during the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Pittsburgh entered the draft with the No. 17 overall pick. Seeing how the board was shaping up, they made a trade with the New England Patriots to acquire the No. 14 overall pick. First-rounders were swapped and the Steelers sent a fourth-round pick, No. 120 overall, to New England as well.

With that pick, the Steelers addressed their biggest need coming into the draft. They selected Georgia offensive tackle Broderick Jones, who will shore up the right tackle spot in the early going. Eventually, he could take over at left tackle.

Pittsburgh won’t have to wait long to make their next selection, as they are set to kick off Round 2 with the top pick. That pick was acquired from the Chicago Bears ahead of the deadline in November in exchange for wide receiver Chase Claypool. Is there a chance that the pick is on the move again?

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, via MLFootball on Twitter, the Steelers are receiving heavy trade interest in the No. 32 pick. Calls have been coming in before Round 1 even completed, as teams are looking to get in position to select Kentucky quarterback Will Levis.

Picks at the top of the second round normally hold a lot of value and this year is no different. If there isn’t a player that the Steelers are in love with at that spot, trading back and compiling even more draft capital makes sense.

But, the Steelers are going to have to be blown away by an offer. Their biggest remaining need is the cornerback position and Joey Porter Jr. out of Penn State is still on the board. Given the connection he has to the franchise, as his father Joey Porter was a standout linebacker for the Black and Gold, Pittsburgh could opt to select him instead of trading the pick away.
