Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were underdogs going into the season. They were underdogs during the season. They were underdogs for their Wild Card Round playoff game even though they were the home team.

But Mayfield is perfectly okay with the underdog role, as it has produced some pretty fine results for the Buccaneers thus far.

“It’s always fun to be counted out,” Mayfield said, via Rick Stroud of The Tampa Bay Times. “Obviously, I’m pretty comfortable in it, but our team has completely embraced that.”

Most recently, Tampa Bay hammered the Philadelphia Eagles by a score of 32-9 on Monday night to advance to the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

Mayfield was brilliant in the win, going 22-for-36 with 337 yards and three touchdowns in what was one of his best performances of the 2023-24 campaign. The win was never really in doubt for the Bucs, as they got out to an early 13-0 lead and never looked back.

During the regular season, Mayfield threw for 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while completing 64.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 94.9.

It has been one heck of a resurgence for the 28-year-old, whose NFL career appeared to be on life support last year when he split time between the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams, totaling 10 touchdowns and eight picks.

Mayfield proceeded to sign a one-year deal with the Buccaneers last offseason, and no one knew what to expect. The end result has been arguably the best season of Mayfield’s NFL tenure, and Tampa Bay went 9-8 and won the NFC South division title.

Baker Mayfield and Co. will now head up north to battle the Detroit Lions next weekend. They will surely be underdogs once again, but you know what? They are probably better off.
