Baker Mayfield has been one of the NFL’s top feel-good stories this season, as the previously unwanted quarterback has revitalized his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Buccaneers quarterbacks coach Todd Lewis spoke about Mayfield earlier this week and explained both the strengths and the weaknesses of the 28-year-old.

He began by praising Mayfield’s intelligence.

“Mayfield’s biggest strength is he’s very smart,” Lewis said during an appearance on the Buccaneers’ official radio network, per the JoeBucsFan website. “He understands the system. He has command of it. You know once he knows it very good, he’s going to execute it.”

Lewis then went on to say that if there is one thing Mayfield can improve upon, it’s taking his time.

“The thing that I just have to continue to work on him is because of his grit and his excitement, just to get him not to go as fast,” he said. “Sometimes he goes super fast. And, you know, just to get him to be smooth and slow down a little bit because you can just twitch up. And smooth is fast, and not being herky jerky. That’s when he gets in trouble; he’s a little herky jerky. But when he’s smooth … I always just remind him, ‘Hey, remember, smooth is fast.’ When he’s smooth, he’s very unstoppable.”

Through Tampa Bay’s first six games this season, Mayfield has thrown for 1,363 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 65.2 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 89.2.

This comes a year after Baker Mayfield split time between the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams and totaled 10 touchdowns and eight picks in 12 games. Prior to that, he released by the Cleveland Browns after a rough 2021 campaign.

The Bucs have gotten off to a rather surprising 3-3 start this season and will play host to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday afternoon.
