Is Houston Texans Head Coach Bill O’Brien on the Hot Seat?
The Texans finished last year fourth in the AFC South. Through two games in 2018, they remain in the basement. The games they won in 2017 were credited to the offensive firepower brought to Houston by rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson. Without Watson’s remarkable run, how weak would have the Texans performed?
And this isn’t a team that is lacking star power.
DeAndre Hopkins is one of the elite wide receivers in the league. And fellow wideout Will Fuller is a touchdown threat every time he lines up. Running back Lamar Miller rushed for over 1,000 yards twice in his career. On defense, although defensive end J.J. Watt has been unable to stay healthy, they have other stars. Like Watt, Jadeveon Clowney and Whitney Mercilus are both Pro Bowl-caliber pass-rushers. The Texans are in win now mode, but they aren’t winning.
So who needs to be blamed? Coach Bill O’Brien.
Since he was hired in 2014, O’Brien led the Texans to 9-7 records in each of his first three years. In 2015 and 2016, the Texans won the division but were knocked out of the playoffs. The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Texans in the Wild Card game in 2015. In 2016, the New England Patriots defeated O’Brien’s Texans in the divisional round. O’Brien has been unable to take the Texans to the next level, so 2018 could be his last season.
Unless of course, Houston turns things around quickly.
