Texans: 4 Reasons Houston Has Underachieved Early in 2018

No. 3: Poor Usage of weapons

The Texans have surrounded Deshaun Watson with plenty of options to distribute the ball. On the outside, Watson can throw to wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who is a top-five wide receiver. Or fellow wideout Will Fuller IV, who is a speeder and has played well the first few weeks, at times outshining Hopkins in the process.

But where Houston seems to be lacking this season is in the running game. Alfred Blue is a quality running back who is a great complement to the starter, Lamar Miller. Yet, Miller has only 58 carries, and just 225 yards this season. These stats may be a product of playing from behind, but Miller is also a threat in the passing game.

In the passing game, Fuller and Hopkins are getting majority of the targets. Both of them have well over two hundred yards receiving, while nobody else has over one hundred outside of slot receiver Keke Coutee. In addition, Fuller and Hopkins have a combined 69 targets, which is about two thirds of Watson’s pass attempts.

Houston needs to diversify in its offense. More players need to get involved, so the defense cannot focus on certain players. The running backs and tight ends must have a bigger impact in the offense moving forward.
