No. 4: Inability to finish drives with touchdowns
Along with struggling to start games fast and spreading the ball around, Houston has been unable finish drives with touchdowns. Before Week 4, Houston managed to score a total of six touchdowns. To put that into perspective, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes more than doubled Houston with his 13 touchdowns over that same span.
Things looked better against the Colts, yes. But the combination of the offense losing steam in the second half, paired with the defense not being able to protect the first-half lead, is indicative of all the problems going on with the Texans right now.
Not only is Houston not scoring when they get in the opposing team’s territory, it is also struggling to get down the field. When faced with third downs, Houston is converting 40 percent of the time — roughly in the middle of the pack. Considering the offensive weapons available, this number should be better.
Houston must be able to sustain drives and finish them with touchdowns if it wants to win games. Things do not get easier for the Texans in Week 5 either. They face a Dallas Cowboys team in prime time on Sunday Night Football, and they are fresh off a 26-24 win over the Detroit Lions last week.
