The Los Angeles Chargers should pursue a trade for Cam Newton

Why Cam Newton Should Be A Consideration For The Chargers

Quite frankly, Cam Newton is the type of quarterback that can change a franchise. He has had a rough couple of years, but there is still a good chance he can get his career back on track with some time, patience, and the right fit.

Things in Carolina have gotten a bit ugly. Even before Newton went down with his latest injury, fans were talking negatively about him. A change of scenery could be exactly what the doctor ordered for Newton.

The Chargers would present Newton with a very intriguing situation. Newton has never had a weapon like he would have with Keenan Allen. Even without Gordon, the Chargers would have a running back to take pressure off of Newton in Austin Ekeler.

Gone are the days that Newton would take over games with his arm and his legs. He will have to focus on being a passer more than a runner. However, if the Chargers needed him to, Newton can offer them the ability to pick up yardage on the ground, while also being able to extend plays with his athleticism.

Newton is 30 years old, which gives him some time to figure things out. He could potentially have another five or six good seasons left in him. Los Angeles is still in winning mode and Newton could actually be a better fit over the next three or four years than the aging Rivers would.

Also, the Chargers likely wouldn’t have to give up crazy value to acquire Newton. There is no telling what the Panthers would want for the longtime face of their franchise, but Newton might only be worth a second to fourth-round pick.

If he could be had for a third or fourth-round pick, the Chargers should give it a shot. Taking risks is the only way for franchises to make the jump from contender to champion. Newton may not be the guy to lead them to a championship, but it’s worth a shot.

Expect to hear plenty of rumors surrounding the Chargers this offseason. Los Angeles needs to make some changes and if quarterback ends up being one of them, Newton would be a very intriguing fit.
