The pros and cons of the Panthers sticking with Cam Newton

Pros

The decision to retain Newton definitely comes with its perks. For starters, the veteran signal-caller is under contract through 2020 and only carries a cap hit of only $21.1 million next season.

Even though $21.1 million is an inordinate amount of money to some, it is actually a bargain in terms of the current quarterback market. As a matter of fact, there are currently 13 quarterbacks that possess higher cap hits than Newton in 2020.

In addition, if Newton is able to remain healthy, the Panthers wouldn’t have better options available to them in free agency. When healthy, Newton is irrefutably better than Teddy Bridgewater and Jameis Winston. He’s also miles ahead of Kyle Allen and Will Grier on the current roster.

Aside from Rhule, the Panthers also added Joe Brady to their coaching staff. After watching LSU’s offense in 2019, it’s apparent that Brady wants a quarterback that can extend plays when needed. Not many quarterbacks are better than Newton when it comes to creating with their legs.

Last but not least, the Panthers also can draft the best player available in the draft knowing they have Newton as their starter. Whether it be an offensive tackle or a cornerstone on defense, Carolina can now narrow their list of prospects that can be taken with the No. 7 pick.
