The Buffalo Bills have one of the best offenses in the NFL led by superstar quarterback, Josh Allen. In 2022, they ranked second in points scored and second in yardage gained, putting pressure on opposing defenses on a weekly basis. But, coming into the offseason, it was their offensive depth chart that people were keeping an eye on.
Buffalo came into the offseason with a few desires on that side of the ball. A more consistent No. 2 option in the passing game behind Stefon Diggs would be ideal as Gabriel Davis remains a bit too much boom-or-bust. Addressing the running game would also be a good idea.
The Bills finished seventh in rushing yards in the NFL, but their ground game isn’t something many teams are fearful of. A big part of their success is the rushing ability of Allen, who had 792 yards last season. Leading rushing Devin Singletary moved on this offseason as well, signing a deal with the Houston Texans in free agency.
Damien Harris was signed to help replace him and could pair up with James Cook as a tandem in the backfield. But, if the Bills really want to take their running game to the next level, they should look to bring in one of the veterans who could be available on the trade market.
One of those players could be Derrick Henry of the Tennessee Titans. Staring down a rebuild, there are rumors that the Titans could move on from a few more veterans with the NFL Draft upon us. In addition to Henry, quarterback Ryan Tannehill and safety Kevin Byard could all be available.
What could a deal between the Bills and Titans centered around Henry look like? A suggested trade package is Buffalo sending the No. 59 and No. 130 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to Tennessee in exchange for Henry and the No. 186 pick.
Fitting Henry’s contract on their salary cap would have some challenges as the Bills are limited in that regard. If they don’t see running back as a pressing need, they could look to spend their resources elsewhere.
However, adding Henry to their backfield would provide the team with something they have lacked in recent years. Someone to rely on to carry the ball to wear down an opposing defense and run the clock late in games hasn’t always been available to Buffalo. It has been one of the things that have held them back from getting over the hump and winning a championship.
With Henry in the fold, that shortcoming would disappear. With how bad the weather gets in Orchard Park near the end of the season, having a weapon such as Henry to hand the ball off to 20+ times per game to open up the passing game for Allen would be ideal.
