This Bills-Vikings Trade Sends Dalvin Cook To Buffalo

The Buffalo Bills are expecting some turnover on their roster this offseason. They had some major pieces hitting free agency this year and keeping all of them would be virtually impossible. The biggest piece that they have lost thus far is linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, who signed a record-setting four-year $72 million contract with the Chicago Bears.

Buffalo was able to retain safety Jordan Poyer, pairing him up once again with Micah Hyde for at least one more season. There are a few more key players in free agency and the general manager Brandon Beane will do what he can to retain as many players as possible.

Another player to keep an eye on is running back Devin Singletary. Given how deep the running back free agency class is, the market has been slow-moving thus far. But, all signs are pointing toward the Bills moving on from Singletary and going in a different direction.

They could look to make a splash and sign a player such as Miles Sanders, whose time with the Philadelphia Eagles looks like it is coming to an end. Ezekiel Elliott will also be hitting free agency after the Dallas Cowboys cut him and designated him as a post-June 1st cut.

Earlier in the offseason, there were some reports that the Bills could look to trade for a running back. They made an offer to the Carolina Panthers for Christian McCaffrey and Aaron Jones was a suggested target as well before he restructured his contract with the Green Bay Packers.

If the Bills want to take a big swing at the running back position, Dalvin Cook of the Minnesota Vikings could be an ideal trade target for the team. The running back market could be held up as teams are waiting to see if Minnesota will actually trade Cook, who has refused to take a pay cut.

One trade offer has reportedly already been made to the Vikings centered around Cook. He has a massive $14.1 cap hit and when coupled with his refusal to negotiate a pay cut, the Vikings could be inclined to move him.

Given how inconsistent their running game has been in recent seasons, Cook would be a huge upgrade for Buffalo. Add in the fact that his brother, James Cook, is on the roster already and this could be something that Dalvin actually pushes to have done.

What would it take for the Bills to land him? A suggested trade between the teams was the Bills sending a second-round pick, No. 59 overall, to the Vikings in exchange for the Pro Bowl running back.

As a contending team, Buffalo shouldn’t lead any stone unturned when it comes to upgrading the roster. Cook would represent a massive one for the backfield and is worth the price despite the expensive contract.

From Minnesota’s perspective, they would pick up a premium draft pick and save some money on the salary cap. They could then work to re-sign Andrew Mattison, bringing him back for a fraction of what Cook would cost while providing a similar impact. In six games that Mattison has played without Cook in the lineup, he has gained 477 yards on the ground, with four games of at least 90 yards. Through the air, he has totaled 216 yards while scoring five total touchdowns.
