The Cincinnati Bengals are currently in limbo.
While they entered the season with Super Bowl aspirations, the Bengals have gotten off to a rough start, dropping their first two games and scoring a grand total of 27 points over the first two weeks. Cincinnati ranks last in the NFL in offense, and to make matters worse, quarterback Joe Burrow is already banged up.
There has been speculation that the Bengals could ultimately move wide receiver Tee Higgins between now and the Oct. 31 trade deadline, as Higgins and the club failed to reach a long-term agreement prior to the season.
However, we haven’t heard much about fellow wide out Tyler Boyd. Yet.
Like Higgins, Boyd is in the final year of his deal, and in a Cincinnati receiving corps that also includes Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase, it’s hard to imagine that the Bengals can afford to pay all three.
There have been reports that Cincy may not be factoring Higgins into its future plans, but maybe it would be wiser for the club to ultimately pay Higgins and trade Boyd?
Should the Bengals decide to place Boyd on the trade block, there would be no shortage of suitors, and the Chicago Bears could be one of the top potential destinations.
While the Bears do have DJ Moore, they are in desperate need of depth at receiver, and it seems pretty clear that young quarterback Justin Fields needs some help.
Chicago could send a 2024 third-round draft pick to Cincinnati in exchange for Boyd.
This would give the Bears a very solid tandem of Moore and Boyd, and the Bengals would recoup a solid draft pick for a guy who is likely going to walk in the offseason anyway.
Through the first two weeks of 2023, Boyd has logged eight catches for 62 yards.
