This Chiefs-Bengals Trade Sends Intriguing WR To Kansas City

The Kansas City Chiefs don’t have many glaring holes on their roster. They once again handled some defections in free agency well, filling holes when the opportunity presented itself. As long as Andy Reid is the head coach and Patrick Mahomes is the starting quarterback, they will be able to overcome some deficiencies on offense.

But, adding some reinforcements to that side of the ball certainly wouldn’t help. The Chiefs lost both starting offensive tackles and two of their top wide receivers with Orlando Brown Jr., Andrew Wylie, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman all departing.

Jawaan Taylor was signed away from the Jacksonville Jaguars to help the offensive line, but not much was done at wide receiver. Richie James Jr. was signed away from the New York Giants in free agency and Rashee Rice was drafted in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

They will be joining holdovers Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore atop the wide receiver depth chart. While there is plenty of promise and potential in that group, they are lacking experience.

Kansas City could fill that void with DeAndre Hopkins, who had been linked to the team as a trade target even before the Arizona Cardinals waived him. He would solve a lot of their problems, but they should keep their options open.

If the Chiefs miss out on him, they could try and turn their attention to Tyler Boyd of the Cincinnati Bengals. He was mentioned as one of four players Kansas City could target to round out their roster by Enzo Flojo of Clutch Points.

“His precise route-running ability and reliable hands make him a reliable target in both short and intermediate passing situations. Moreover, Boyd’s proficiency as a blocker adds another dimension to his game, making him a valuable asset in the Chiefs’ offensive scheme. Acquiring Boyd would not only bolster the Chiefs’ receiving corps but also provide a cost-effective solution to enhance offensive versatility.”

There is likely a near zero-percent chance that the Bengals trade Boyd, especially to the team they have faced off against in the AFC Championship Game the last two years. But, knowing that Joe Burrow, Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase are all in line for extensions soon, Boyd could be the odd man out long-term.

In the final year of a four-year, $43 million extension, the Bengals could shop him around and try getting some value in return instead of losing him for nothing in free agency. The Chiefs would certainly be interested.

What could a trade between the Chiefs and Bengals look like? Kansas City could offer Cincinnati a third-round pick to see if they bite. That is a lot more value than the Houston Texans received for Brandin Cooks from the Dallas Cowboys, but the Chiefs would have to get aggressive.

They are in direct competition with the Bengals, so they would have to offer more. Boyd would be a perfect replacement for Smith-Schuster as someone that can operate in short and intermediate routes while also helping in the run game as an excellent blocker.
