This Chiefs-Cardinals Day 2 Draft Trade Features DeAndre Hopkins

All eyes were on the Kansas City Chiefs as the final pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. With top quarterback prospects in Kentucky’s Will Levis and Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker still available, there was a chance a team would trade up to get that fifth-year option on their contracts. Ultimately no deal was done.

Instead, Kansas City stayed put, selecting Felix Anudike-Uzomah out of Kansas State to bolster their pass rush. It did make some sense for the Chiefs to not move down as they don’t need any more draft capital this year and Anudike-Uzomah fills a need while fitting value-wise.

But, just because a trade wasn’t completed with their first-round pick doesn’t mean there won’t be some wheeling and dealing done by Kansas City. They have nine more selections to make and with how deep their roster is, some of those picks will assuredly be on the move.

A need still exists at the wide receiver position where the Chiefs have yet to fill the void left by JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman departing in free agency. The only addition that was made was signing Richie James Jr. away from the New York Giants.

While Kansas City does have young players in Skyy Moore and Kadarius Toney they have high hopes for, bringing in another veteran would make sense. It would take pressure off of tight end Travis Kelce to have another established player in the mix.

Who could the Chiefs target? One player who would make sense is DeAndre Hopkins of the Arizona Cardinals. While Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort has said Hopkins is likely staying in the desert after a busy Day 1 of the 2023 NFL Draft, nothing is set in stone. If the Chiefs come up with an aggressive offer that meets the Cardinals’ asking price, they could still pull the trigger.

What could a trade between Kansas City and Arizona look like? They can get very aggressive and offer their second-round pick, No. 63 overall, along with a sixth-round pick, No. 178. The Cardinals have long sought a second-round pick in return for him and would get their wish with this deal.

There isn’t a player that will be on the board at No. 63 that can have the kind of impact Hopkins is capable of providing the Chiefs. Many mock drafts predict they will take a wide receiver in that spot, but adding another rookie to the mix would be very risky for the defending champions.

Bringing in the established Hopkins and re-working his deal is the way to go. There are some risks involved as he has missed 15 games the last two seasons. But, when on the field, he remains one of the best wide receivers in the NFL.
