The Miami Dolphins showed throughout the 2022 season that they can hang with the upper-echelon teams in the AFC when healthy. Getting and keeping quarterback Tua Tagovailoa healthy is key to the team realizing its potential.
When he was healthy, the Dolphins were clicking on all cylinders. Before he was in concussion protocols and dealing with head injuries, Tagovailoa and the Dolphins looked like real contenders in the AFC.
If he is unable to stay healthy, the Dolphins have to make sure that they have a roster strong enough to withstand his being sidelined. To help compensate for a potentially less prolific offense, Miami should focus on bolstering its defense.
There are some very explosive offenses to slow down in the AFC and two reside in the AFC East with the Dolphins. The Buffalo Bills led by Josh Allen are always dangerous and depending on who the New York Jets get to play quarterback they could soar as well.
Slowing down dynamic passing offenses isn’t easy, so the Dolphins could look to upgrade their secondary this offseason. The loss of Byron Jones certainly hurts, but if the team designates him as a post-June 1st cut, they can save $13.6 million.
In that scenario, they should then turn their attention to trading for Jalen Ramsey. The multi-time All-Pro and Pro Bowler is reportedly going to be on the move this offseason. The Dolphins have been suggested as a potential landing spot for him and the fit certainly makes sense.
Short on 2023 draft capital, the Dolphins can try and entice the Los Angeles Rams with future draft picks. The No. 178 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft along with a second and fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft could be enough to get Los Angeles to agree to a deal.
The Dolphins couldn’t slow down any opponents through the air in 2022, ranking 27th in yards allowed and 26th in passing touchdowns allowed. Jones has turned out to be a miss in free agency and the team needs to find a capable running mate for Xavien Howard.
Having Ramsey and Howard on the perimeter of the defense with Kader Kohou at cornerback and Jevon Holland at safety could start turning what was a weakness into a strength for Miami. To get through the AFC you need to beat the likes of Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes and Allen. Having a strong secondary is key and the Dolphins would be well on their way to achieving that pulling off a trade for Ramsey.
