This Eagles-Rams Trade Sends Jalen Ramsey To Philadelphia

For the first time as a professional, star cornerback Jalen Ramsey looked human in the 2022 season. There was a lot of that going on with the Los Angeles Rams, who fell well short of expectations during the season.

After winning the Super Bowl in the 2021 season, the Rams were unable to replicate that level of success in defending their title. Injuries were a big reason for the team’s downfall, but that wasn’t an excuse when it came to Jalen Ramsey.

In some regards, 2022 was a banner year for Jalen Ramsey. He set career highs in tackles, sacks, quarterback hits, tackles for loss and passes defended while tying his career best in interceptions. But, he did struggle when it came to locking down No. 1 receivers on the opposing offense.

Teams no longer feared attacking him in the passing game as he surrendered a completion percentage of 62.6 percent and a career-worst five touchdowns. While still a productive player in many regards, he may no longer be the kind of shutdown corner that just eliminates one side of the field on a weekly basis.

Cornerbacks are under a lot of pressure, especially ones as good as Jalen Ramsey, as they are routinely put on an island. 2022 was the first time that he showed he may not be capable of doing that consistently anymore, which puts the Rams in a tough predicament.

While they want to remain as competitive as possible, trading Jalen Ramsey is something that needs to be considered. His cap hit is enormous and the team needs to shore up multiple spots on the roster, moving him would be the easiest way to accomplish both feats.

One team that could have interest in acquiring him is the Philadelphia Eagles. Darius Slay is locked into a contract but James Bradberry is set to hit free agency. If he ends up leaving, the Eagles need to find a replacement opposite of Slay. Jalen Ramsey would be a perfect fit.

Having another star opposite of him would likely do wonders with getting his production back on track. The talent is still there and the Eagles’ defensive scheme is one any cornerback would love to be in given the pass-rushing talent they possess.

What would it cost to land him? The Rams cannot expect the same kind of return that they paid for him a few years ago, but he is still worth a good amount. The Eagles can make an aggressive offer, putting the 2023 first-round pick and 2024 second-round pick they own from the New Orleans Saints on the table depending on how strong the market is.

At the very least, a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and their additional second-rounder in the 2024 NFL Draft should be made available. If the Eagles get the Jalen Ramsey we have become accustomed to and not the 2022 version, this will be yet another masterclass acquisition by general manager Howie Roseman.
