This Eagles-Titans Trade Sends Derrick Henry To Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Eagles’ backfield is going to look different in 2023 than it did in 2022. Pro Bowl running back Miles Sanders was hitting free agency. In addition to Sanders, Boston Scott also had his contract expire.

Scott will be returning to Philadelphia, agreeing to a one-year, $2 million deal. Sanders, however, moved on in free agency. He signed a four-year, $25.4 million contract with the Carolina Panthers to become their feature back.

With a void on their depth chart, the Eagles dipped into free agency to bring in a running back. They landed Rashaad Penny, a former first-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks, agreeing to a one-year, $1.35 million deal.

That deal is solid value for the Eagles, who are getting a productive running back at a very affordable price. Penny has averaged 5.7 yards per carry in his career, with the caveat being that he isn’t able to stay on the field very often.

In his five-year career, Penny has played in only 42 games, recording 364 total touches for 2,140 yards and 14 touchdowns. Knowing that it would be risky to count on Penny being available for an entire season, the Eagles could look to add more players at the running back position.

If they want to get super aggressive and look for a true upgrade and not just a depth piece, they could check in with the Tennessee Titans about Derrick Henry. The star running back has been involved in some trade rumors this offseason and the two franchises have a rapport from working out a trade centered around A.J. Brown during the 2022 NFL Draft.

What could a trade between the Eagles and Titans look like? A suggested trade package is Philadelphia sending the No. 62 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and a 2024 third-round pick to Tennessee in exchange for Henry and the No. 186 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Titans are on the fence about rebuilding or not this offseason. Trading Henry would signal a rebuild being underway and landing a second-round pick is good value for a running back that doesn’t have much of an impact in the passing game.

An already scary running game would become downright horrifying for opponents to deal with Henry being added to a backfield that already has Jalen Hurts. With Hurts signing a massive extension, this could be one of the last chances the Eagles have to add a high-priced veteran to the roster.

Given the contract that they gave to Penny, adding another running back is certainly a possibility. He would be great insurance behind Henry, who has led the league in rushing attempts in three out of the last four seasons. Having two capable runners will help keep them fresh as well in what the Eagles are hoping is another long season with a Super Bowl run.
