The Green Bay Packers may be losing safety Darnell Savage to free agency this offseason, so they may need to turn elsewhere for some help in their secondary. How about reaching out to the Arizona Cardinals about Budda Baker?
Baker’s name was regularly mentioned at the trade deadline back in October, but the Cardinals ultimately held on to the six-time Pro Bowler.
The 28-year-old is entering the final year of his contract, and with Arizona appearing headed toward a rebuild, Baker may be on his way out. It seems rather difficult to imagine the Cardinals re-signing him next offseason, so they may want to explore a trade now to extract some value for him.
The Packers could send a 2024 second-round draft pick to Arizona in exchange for Baker, which would provide Green Bay with a terrific Savage replacement and give the Cards a valuable draft asset to use toward the probable retooling of their roster.
Baker, who played his collegiate football at the University of Washington, was selected by the Cardinals in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
He immediately established himself as one of the league’s best defensive backs, making the Pro Bowl and earning a First-Team All-Pro selection during his rookie campaign.
The Bellevue, Wa. native has consistently been one of the top safeties in football ever since, and he could absolutely help a contending team (like the Packers) reach that next level.
Green Bay demonstrated that it is unquestionably a team on the rise this season, as it went 6-2 over its final games to make the playoffs and then proceeded to rout the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round.
Adding someone like Baker into the mix would only further boost the Packers’ chances of making a deep playoff run next year.
