The Trade
Packers Receive: WR Dante Pettis, 2021 Sixth-Round Pick
49ers Receive: RB Jamaal Williams
Let’s start this off by saying that the Packers need to make another move at wide receiver just to add more talent. Devin Funchess was added in free agency, but Pettis would bring more speed and playmaking ability to the field. He hasn’t proven that he can be a huge impact player, but he is worth taking a chance on.
For the 49ers, trading Matt Breida to the Miami Dolphins this offseason was a tough move to make. They thrive by running the football and Williams would be a perfect fit. He would slide right in and earn a role immediately.
Williams is coming off of a 2019 season with the Packers that saw him carry the football 107 times for 460 yards and a touchdown. He also caught 39 passes for 253 yards and five scores. The 49ers always love running backs with dual-threat ability.
As for Pettis, he only caught 11 passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns last season. But, at 24 years old, there is still plenty of time for him to live up to the billing of being the No. 44 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Green Bay would be making this move comfortable due to the addition of rookie running back A.J. Dillon. The Packers love what he brings to the field and it would clear up more time for him to play. Pettis doesn’t fit with the 49ers, which makes this move a no-brainer for them as well.
Both teams could choose to stand pat to start the season. They could see how each of these players work out where they currently are. However, it would also make sense to make a swap.
Expect to hear more rumors as the season continues to draw closer. The Packers don’t necessarily need Williams and the 49ers don’t have to keep Pettis. It would be intriguing to see the two players swap places and be given a chance in a new system to flourish.
