This Panthers-Ravens Trade Sends Lamar Jackson To Carolina

There are going to be a lot of eyes on free-agent quarterback Lamar Jackson this off-season. The former MVP was unable to work out a long-term deal with the Baltimore Ravens, making him an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

While it remains likely that the Ravens will put the franchise tag on Lamar Jackson, especially after Roquan Smith agreed to a long-term contract, there is still a chance that he moves on this offseason. A tag-and-trade is certainly a possibility, similar to what we saw the Green Bay Packers do with Davante Adams last offseason.

Lamar Jackson has done more than enough to secure a long-term deal from the franchise, but they seem hesitant to commit to him long-term. Given some of the turmoil facing the Ravens, the feeling could be mutual at this point. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman moving on could also play a part.

If a trade becomes a possibility, there will be plenty of teams lining up to try and acquire Lamar Jackson. One of those teams could be the Carolina Panthers, who are desperate to find a long-term answer at the position.

Given how they finished the season, as Carolina went 7-10 and just missed winning the NFC South, the Panthers may not be in range to select one of this season’s top quarterback prospects. That could lead to a blockbuster trade for Lamar Jackson, but it will not be cheap.

In that hypothetical deal the Panthers trade the Nos. 9, 40 and 61 overall picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, a 2024 first and second-round pick and a 2025 first-round pick for Lamar Jackson. Six picks in the first two rounds of the draft over three years is a very steep price. Not to mention, a lucrative contract will also be handed out.

Alas, the Panthers are a franchise that could be willing to pay that price. Given how wide-open the NFC South is, acquiring Lamar Jackson could put Carolina over the top as the rest of the division also has quarterback questions moving forward.

Owner David Tepper will have to weigh if going all-in on Lamar Jackson is worth sacrificing so much premium draft capital for. Given how badly they need a quarterback, it is a deal he could pull the trigger on, as they would be set there and focus on building up the rest of the roster around him.
