This Saints-Bills Trade Sends Big Defensive Tackle To New Orleans

The New Orleans Saints are looking like the early favorites to take home the NFC South divisional title this upcoming season. This was a division that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won last season with an 8-9 record, so even just a small improvement from the Saints could put them on top.

With their signing of Derek Carr, New Orleans is in the best shape at the quarterback position. The Buccaneers are set to have Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask battle it out for their starting spot. The Carolina Panthers used the No. 1 pick on Bryce Young, who is competing with Andy Dalton. The Atlanta Falcons are committed to Desmond Ridder for the 2023 season.

That puts the Saints in great shape, as average quarterback performance last season could have led to them winning the division. But, the past is the past and they are now focused on what is ahead.

New Orleans, despite some salary cap issues, has a solid roster on both sides of the ball. Injuries have been a thorn in their side, but if they get some positive regression to the mean in that area, they could be in business.

One position on the team that is a little bit shaky after the offseason is the defensive line. New Orleans was hit hard by defections there with Kentavious Street, David Onyemata, Shy Tuttle and Marcus Davenport all departing.

If the Saints wanted to get aggressive in upgrading the defensive line, they could check in on the availability of Ed Oliver of the Buffalo Bills. Oliver is heading into the final season of his rookie contract and extension talks between him and the team haven’t seemed to get very far.

Creating another potential hole on their defense would make trading Oliver a surprise, but it cannot be counted out. If he is traded at any point, the Bills will save $10.8 million instantly. That is a good chunk of change the team could put toward another position of need on the roster.

What could a trade between the Saints and Bills look like? New Orleans could offer a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft along with a third-rounder in the 2025. Getting two selections for a player you may not keep long-term would certainly be intriguing for Buffalo.

For the Saints, they would be getting a major upgrade for the interior of their defensive line with Oliver. While he hasn’t quite lived up to the expectations of being the No. 9 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, he is a solid, durable player that missed the first regular season games of his career in Year 4.
