This Stat Shows How Bad Broncos’ Russell Wilson Has Been

An argument could be made that the single most disappointing player in the NFL thus far this season has been Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson. The Broncos paid a pretty penny to acquire Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks this past offseason, sending a package of five draft picks and three players to the great northwest in exchange for him. On top of that, Wilson also received a massive extension worth $245 million.

What have the Broncos received in return for that level of commitment to Wilson? A 3-9 record and the worst offense in the NFL. They have lost four games in a row and eight of their last nine as the season has spiraled out of control in large part because the offense is allergic to scoring points.

Injuries have definitely played a part, as Tim Patrick was lost before the season even began. During the regular season, Javonte Williams tore his ACL, while Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler battled injuries throughout the season. But, even when the team was healthy, Wilson was not producing.

Wilson has struggled mightily this season as he looks like a poor fit for Nathaniel Hackett’s offensive scheme. Hackett is in over his head as a head coach, but that is another issue altogether. Wilson is being paid a lot of money to overcome those issues and uplift the team but he has failed in that regard.

On the season, the nine-time Pro Bowler has completed only 60.1 percent of his passes for 2,558 yards with only eight touchdowns and five interceptions. The touchdown total is truly shocking as Wilson has never thrown for fewer than 20 in a season and averaged 29.2 per season in his career with the Seahawks.

Wilson has only one game this season in which he has thrown multiple touchdowns. The other quarterbacks who have accomplished that this season? Zach Wilson of the New York Jets, Baker Mayfield formerly of the Carolina Panthers and since claimed by the Los Angeles Rams and rookie Brock Purdy.

Zach Wilson has been benched by the Jets and replaced for the time being by Mike White. Mayfield was benched and released by the Panthers and picked up by the Rams. Purdy is a rookie who has made one appearance after being the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, throwing two touchdowns in relief of Jimmy Garoppolo.

Russell Wilson has looked tentative and unsure of where to deliver the ball, thinking too much and not just reacting and trusting his instincts and skills. Being on a list like that is concerning for anyone, let alone a player that the Broncos committed so many assets and money toward.
