Expect the Titans to Use 2018 as a Learning Year
With a new coaching regime in place, a new philosophy must be understood. I’m a believer that practice makes perfect. I’m also a believer the best way to learn something is by learning from mistakes. Rehearsing during scrimmages the new offensive, defensive, and special teams schemes are one challenge.
However, putting on the pads against real competition is another.
Not only is there a new head coach, and offensive coordinator, but there’s also a new defensive coordinator. Dean Peas retired as the Baltimore Ravens DC on January 1, 2018. Twenty-eight days later, Peas would be announced as the Titans new DC. How did this happen? A former player convinced him to join his coaching staff. That former player was Mike Vrabel who was a linebacker for the New England Patriots, while Peas was a part of the New England coaching staff.
The Titans are running a complete overhaul entering 2018 compared to their game plan from the past several years. It’s unlikely a roster would immediately grasp a new scheme so quickly on both offense and defense unless the coaching staff is that good.
We’re not sure yet how great Vrabel will be. He’s a rookie head coach, but his DC and OC have a comfortable amount of experience,
I’m expecting the Titans to have an up-and-down season, and I don’t expect them to make the playoffs in 2018. Considering them a contender next year after a year under the new regime is not out of the question.
We’ll learn a lot about this team over the first four games of 2018, as they look to reveal what kind of organization they’ll be over the course of the season.
