The Tennessee Titans look like a franchise that is heading toward a rebuild. They released a number of veteran players already this offseason to slash payroll and more moves could be on the horizon.
There have been rumors swirling that the Titans could move on from quarterback Ryan Tannehill this offseason as well. Tannehill has found a good amount of success as the Titans’ starter, helping the team to the postseason in his first three seasons in Nashville. But, 2022 was a difficult one, as the team’s performance tanked with him sidelined because of injury.
There are quite a few teams around the league that would consider Tannehill an upgrade. If the Titans do opt to move on from Tannehill, they will join the fray for a quarterback in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Could they be a team that makes a move to put them in a position to select Anthony Richardson out of Florida? Tennessee is reportedly set to host Richardson for a top-30 visit soon, which could go a long way in determining their plans during the 2023 NFL Draft.
Currently, in the No. 11 spot, it is hard to imagine Richardson slipping that far in the draft. It feels like a near lock that unless something weird occurs between now and the draft in late April, Richardson will be selected before the Titans get on the clock.
The Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans are widely expected to select quarterbacks with the first two picks of the draft. If Tennessee wants to have a real shot at selecting Richardson or one of the other top quarterback prospects in this year’s draft, they have to get ahead of the Indianapolis Colts at No. 4.
The Seattle Seahawks, Las Vegas Raiders and Atlanta Falcons selecting Nos. 5, 7 and 8, could also pull the trigger on a quarterback. Given the current state of the franchise, the Titans may not be willing to trade assets to move up in the draft, instead hoping the board falls favorably.
But, if they are convinced that Richardson is the next big thing, they will swing a trade to move up the draft board. It would be expensive moving that far up, requiring at least one future first-round pick, but would be worth it to take a shot on the physically gifted Richardson, who has arguably the best tools of any signal caller in this year’s class.
