Tremaine Edmunds Named Best Match For Giants In NFL Free Agency

The New York Giants have already had a strong offseason. They were able to lock up Daniel Jones to a long-term deal, giving him an easy-to-navigate cap number for 2023. By agreeing to a deal with him, New York was able to place the franchise tag on Saquon Barkley, ensuring their two most important offensive players are in the fold for at least 2023.

With those items on the to-do list checked off, it is time for general manager Joe Schoen to get to work on upgrading the rest of the roster. There are plenty of areas of need, as many fans will point to wide receiver as being atop that list.

But, arguably the position most in need of an upgrade is the linebacker spot. The Giants were using a motley crew of veteran retreads and rookies at the position in 2022 that were just unable to elevate their game and get the job done. It would not be shocking to see them have multiple new faces at the position in 2023.

Wink Martindale got creative with his schemes last season. He used hybrid safety Landon Collins at linebacker while also bringing safeties Xavier McKinney and Julian Love down into the box with regularity.

On the most successful Giants’ teams, there was also a dominant linebacker leading the way. Antonio Pierce was the last good one they had and it is about time that they changed that. That is what makes Tremaine Edmunds such a good fit for the team in free agency.

Edmunds has a connection to Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll as he spent the first five seasons of his career with the Buffalo Bills. In 2022, he had a success rate of 74 percent in coverage, allowing just 3.9 yards per pass.

That would be a nice upgrade for the Giants’ defense, but where they really struggled was against the run. While Edmunds wasn’t quite as productive in that regard, even being average in that area would constitute an upgrade for Big Blue.

Another thing working in Edmunds’s favor, which teams such as the Giants will pay a premium for, is his age. Unlike many of his peers, who are already in or leaving their primes, Edmunds hasn’t even hit his yet. Despite heading into Year 6, he is turning only 25 years old in June.

There is certainly some hesitancy in paying big money to a non-premium position, but linebacker is a major need that the Giants need to address. If it isn’t Edmunds, expect the team to make a move in free agency for another established veteran to upgrade the second level of their defense.
