Trey Lance had been the talk of NFL trade rumors all offseason long and things finally got done when he was shipped to the Dallas Cowboys. While things didn’t go well during his tenure with the San Francisco 49ers, there is still a lot of hope that Lance can figure everything out. At the very least, the move to acquire Lance should motivate Dak Prescott to strive for the best season of his career to preserve his starting status.
While this move is one that will not open up playing time for Lance, it’s a great opportunity for the young quarterback. The move gets him away from a horrible situation in San Francisco and enables him to learn from Prescott in a fresh and healthy environment.
Now, Lance has opened up about his feelings on the trade to the Cowboys. He revealed his first thoughts on Tuesday.
“When I heard Cowboys, I had a big smile on my face.”
Even though he’s not going to have a role in 2023, Lance could not be more excited to start the next chapter of his NFL career. It’s clear that he is in a good place.
During his short tenure with the 49ers, Lance ended up playing in just eight games. Not all of those were extended playing time either. He completed 54.9 percent of his pass attempts for 797 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions, to go along with 235 yards and a score on the ground.
At just 23 years of age, the brakes need to be pumped on giving Lance the “bust” title. He has plenty of time to turn his career around. Joining a new franchise like the Cowboys is exactly what the doctor ordered.
It will be interesting to see how Trey Lance develops over the next couple of years. The talent is still there that made him the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. His potential is through the roof.
If the Cowboys are able to develop him and unlock his full potential, they have their future at the quarterback position. Amid rumors that Prescott could be playing for his future in Dallas this season, the franchise has to be excited about being able to acquire Lance from the 49ers.
