Veteran WR Making Most Of Chance With Bills This Offseason

The Buffalo Bills have a major issue to work through with star wide receiver Stefon Diggs. There seems to be a real disconnect between the two parties, which is something that needs to be worked out as training camp is only a few weeks away.

Diggs has blossomed into one of the best wide receivers in the NFL during his time in Buffalo. But, he is reportedly upset with his role in the offense and lack of input for play calling. How much more of a role he could have is anyone’s guess as he has registered at least 154 targets in all three seasons with the Bills.

Some reports have said that he was unhappy that he restructured his contract and no move was made to improve the roster. Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was reportedly who Diggs was hoping the Bills would bring in.

That is still a possibility as Hopkins remains a free agent, but Buffalo hasn’t been a rumored landing spot. If Diggs were to hold out, things would turn dire for the team’s passing offense. Josh Allen is a star at quarterback, but an already thin wide receiver depth chart would get that much thinner.

The Bills would need someone to try and step up in Diggs’ absence. While many people would hope to see Gabriel Davis step into that role, veteran Trent Sherfield could benefit the most. He has been a standout during Bills’ practices this offseason according to Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.

“I’ve loved what I’ve seen from Trent so far; the dude works extremely hard. He’s one of the hardest-working guys on the team. Doesn’t complain about anything. He’s rolling right now,” said Allen.

Sherfield came over to the Bills this offseason as a free agent after spending last season with the Miami Dolphins. Buffalo will be his fourth team in four seasons as he looks to carve out a role and stick long-term with the franchise.

Impressing and getting on the same page with the franchise quarterback is certainly a good way to ensure that happens. With Diggs’ situation playing out, Sherfield was afforded extra snaps this offseason and he has seemingly made the most of them.

Last season, Sherfield recorded career highs with 30 receptions, 417 yards and two touchdowns. If he is given a chance to play a regular role in this explosive offense, all of those marks could be reset again.
