The timing couldn’t have been worse for Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins when he got injured. In Week 8 against the Green Bay Packers, he suffered an Achilles injury, which cut his season short.

It was brutal for the Vikings, who were in the middle of a winning streak when it occurred. The team was already staying afloat without star wide receiver Justin Jefferson and now they had to stay alive without their starting quarterback.

From a personal perspective for Cousins, it could mean a loss of money. He is playing out the final season of his contract and was set up for a nice payday in the offseason. In the opinion of many analysts, Cousins was the best quarterback hitting the market and the Vikings were not allowed to place the franchise tag on him based on the contract he signed.

NFL News & Rumors: Kirk Cousins & Minnesota Vikings Updates

Two months removed from the procedure on his Achilles, Cousins appeared on “The Adam Schefter Podcast” and spoke about a number of topics, including his rehab. But, the one many people were most interested in was his sharing what he hopes to have happen in free agency.

“I would love to be back in Minnesota. Hopefully, we can make that happen. Tends to be more of a February, March conversation. And this is more right now about just finishing the football season, and trying to help us get to the playoffs and then stay in the playoffs.”

Following their loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 15, with Nick Mullens as the starting quarterback, the Vikings’ playoff odds dropped to 51.2 percent. With two matchups against the Detroit Lions in the final three weeks of the season, Minnesota will have their work cut out for them to earn a playoff spot.

Despite not being able to get on the field, Cousins is doing everything he can to help the team earn a playoff spot. However, his main focus is on his future and where he will be playing in 2024 and beyond.

“When we get to late February, the [NFL] Combine, March, kinda try to see how 2024 is going to shake out,” Cousins said to Schefter during the podcast.

Cousins was having another stellar season before the injury, leading the NFL with 291.4 yards per game. It will be interesting to see what kind of contract he lands as teams could be hesitant to pay a 35-year-old coming off an Achilles injury.
