Commanders Could Seek Reunion With Kirk Cousins In Free Agency

Could the Washington Commanders bring quarterback Kirk Cousins back to where it all started? Bleacher Report’s Ryan Fowler thinks it’s a possibility.

Cousins will be a free agent this offseason, and Fowler sees the Commanders’ scheme as a good fit for the veteran signal-caller.

Fowler’s supporting argument is that Washington just brought in Adam Peters as its general manager, and two years ago, Peters played a role in drafting Brock Purdy to the San Francisco 49ers.

While Fowler acknowledges that Cousins is a superior passer to Purdy, he says that, like Purdy, Cousins sometimes falls into the role of game manager.

Cousins, who played his collegiate football at Michigan State, was originally selected by Washington back when the franchise was still the Redskins in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

He spent his first three seasons as Robert Griffin III’s backup, but in 2015, Cousins became the full-time starter and ended up making his first trip to the Pro Bowl in 2016.

Cousins spent six years in Washington overall before ultimately signing with the Minnesota Vikings in 2018. He has been a member of the Vikings ever since, making three more Pro Bowl appearances.

The 35-year-old was on pace for a fantastic campaign in 2023, but eight games into the season, he tore his Achilles, knocking him out for the rest of the year.

Before getting injured, Cousins had thrown for 2,331 yards, 18 touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 69.5 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 103.8.

Cousins will be one of the top players available on the open market this spring, but he definitely carries some risk given his age and the fact that he is coming off of a major injury.

We’ll see if the Commanders decide to pursue a reunion with Kirk Cousins.
