0 Sacks By Kerrigan & Smith

Through two weeks, the Redskins have three sacks on the season. One sack was a hustle play by reserve linebacker Ryan Anderson in Week 1, while defensive end Matt Ioannidis has a sack in each of Washington’s first two games. The Redskins’ top pass rushers, Ryan Kerrigan and Preston Smith have a combined zero sacks and one quarterback pressure.

That has to change.

The Redskins upgraded the defensive line, which many felt would only enhance Kerrigan and Smith’s production. Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne and Ioannidis have played well thus far, but Kerrigan and Smith still aren’t getting to the quarterback. Last week, Sam Bradford was scared in the pocket and dumped it off quickly to negate any pass rush.

However, against Luck and the Colts, there were opportunities and the two outside linebackers couldn’t get home. Smith got to Luck once, forcing him to get rid of the ball early on third down and getting the Redskins off the field. It was just as effective as a sack. But for a player looking to cash in on a big contract in the offseason, Smith must start producing.

With Kerrigan, you expect the sacks to come. In his eighth year, Kerrigan has never missed a game and has 71.5 career sacks. He had an opportunity to add to that total on Sunday against a reserve offensive tackle and he couldn’t get home.
