Why Texans RB David Johnson Is A Huge X-Factor Against The Chiefs
At 28 years of age, Johnson knows that the Texans could be his last hope to regain his form. He has suffered through quite a few injury issues and that is a concern in and of itself. However, due to missing so much time, his body is relatively rested outside of the fact that he has suffered injuries.
Johnson has been an elite dual-threat back when he has been on the field and used as an every-down back. There is no denying that he still has the athletic ability to wreak havoc on opposing defenses.
With the Texans, Johnson is entering a unique situation. Deshaun Watson is an elite quarterback and Johnson will be the every-down running back most of the time. Duke Johnson will play some, but Johnson will get every opportunity he can take.
Against the Chiefs, the Texans will have to take pressure off of Watson. Kansas City has a talented defense, but they do have some holes. Establishing a ground game will be vital for Houston to move the football.
If Johnson plays up to his potential, it would be reasonable to expect between 75-100 yards from him on the ground. He should score a touchdown as well. As a dual-threat back, he could rack up another 50 yards and possibly another score through the air.
Houston has a long uphill battle to compete with the Chiefs in Week 1. They aren’t likely to come out with a win. But, a big game from Johnson would absolutely give them a fighting chance if their defense can slow down Patrick Mahomes in any way.
No matter the outcome of the game, the Texans should be hoping to see David Johnson perform at a high level. His level of play throughout the season will go a long way towards deciding whether or not Houston makes the playoffs.
