Why drafting Jordan Love was a very smart decision by the Packers

The Green Bay Packers have had a very interesting offseason that speaks volumes about the future of the franchise. Brian Gutekunst made his biggest surprising move when he chose to trade up in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft to select Utah State quarterback Jordan Love.

Ahead of the draft, there were rumblings that the Packers had interest in Love. However, they were expected to focus on taking either a wide receiver or a linebacker in the first round.

When they made the decision to trade up, almost everyone thought they were moving up for a wideout. Both Tee Higgins and Michael Pittman Jr. were available. Instead, the Packers drafted their quarterback of the future.

Obviously, a side effect of the move to bring in Love is that Aaron Rodgers will finish his career elsewhere. He wants to play into his 40’s. Love will likely take over the starting job within the next three or four years.

All of that being said, let’s take a look at why drafting Jordan Love was actually an incredibly smart decision for the Packers, despite the media backlash.
