Reasons why Delpit makes sense for the Patriots
Again, the logical choice for many fans, is for the Patriots to select a wide receiver in the first round. Especially since the team doesn’t have another draft pick until the third round due to the Mohamed Sanu trade.
However, besides Brady, the Patriots have other marquee names heading for free agency. One name that hasn’t been mentioned much is Devin McCourty.
McCourty has been a leader for the Patriots for years and he put together one of the best seasons of his career in 2019. The veteran safety out of Rutgers tallied 58 tackles, five interceptions, and two forced fumbles this season.
After yet another productive season from McCourty, there’s a chance that the Patriots are unable to re-sign him this offseason. Given that, Delpit could become a viable replacement in the draft.
Of course, the Patriots would love to be able to keep McCourty in the secondary until the end of his career. But depending on what happens with Brady, New England may have to go in another direction.
As for Delpit, he is regarded as one of the best safety prospects in this year’s draft — and for good reason. Throughout his three years at LSU, Delpit proved that he is a remarkable playmaker when the ball is in the air.
Over the course of his collegiate career, Delpit amassed 24 deflections and eight interceptions. While he excels against the pass, Delpit could definitely improve as a tackler in the open field. That should be something that Belichick can help fix at the next level.
There’s not much more that needs to be said about this year’s draft class of wide receivers. Because of the depth at the receiver position in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Patriots can afford to wait until the third round or trade up to select one in the second round.
Similar to most teams, it is a mystery what New England could do in the first round of the upcoming draft. If the Patriots don’t go with a receiver, then Delpit could be an ideal choice for the six-time Super Bowl champions.
