After eight seasons in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott’s contract situation is a perplexing one. Prescott is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2024 season and the Cowboys are yet to get a deal done with their quarterback.
Despite several opportunities where Dallas could have extended his contract before the likes of Jordan Love and Trevor Lawrence got paid and increased the market, the Cowboys kept stalling. Even now as we approach the start of the regular season, there is no word about his extension.
Whatever the reasons behind the management not putting an offer on the table for Prescott, letting him leave would prove to be detrimental to the team. Irrespective of how the contract negotiations move forward, the following are a couple of reasons why Dallas should keep Prescott by handing him a new deal.
Lack of quality quarterbacks on the Cowboys’ roster
Looking at the Cowboys’ depth chart, the backup quarterbacks on their roster are Cooper Rush and Trey Lance. Neither of them have proven their worth as starting-caliber players, although Lance is a former first-round pick looking to revitalize his career.
Furthermore, getting a signal-caller the next year at par with Prescott’s level will be next to impossible. The other possibility is to go with the draft. Unfortunately, the current crop of quarterbacks who are set to be part of the 2025 draft is considered to be one of the weaker classes, especially when compared to this year’s class.
Dak Prescott’s overall play
Prescott is coming off an excellent season, and his overall play has remained pretty consistent throughout his career. At 31 years of age, the Louisiana native still has multiple good years ahead of him.
Last year, Prescott finished third in passing yards, first in passing touchdowns, and was one of the favorites for the MVP after having one of his best seasons ever. His chemistry with CeeDee Lamb was a major factor in the Cowboys’ success, and Dallas should be looking to build their offense around the pair.
The regular season has not been a problem for Dak and the Cowboys. Ever since he entered the league, he has led the team to winning seasons almost every year. The biggest knock on him has been his inability to see the Cowboys past the Divisional Round of the playoffs, even though the aim for each season is to bring home another Lombardi Trophy.
