The reasons why Trevathan makes sense for the Ravens
For the past four seasons, Trevathan has been anchoring one of the inside linebacker spots for the Chicago Bears. Alongside Roquan Smith, Trevathan had one of the best seasons of his career in 2018, tallying 102 tackles, two sacks, and two interceptions.
As he was playing the final year of his contract in 2019, he was on his way to having another productive season. Then, the veteran linebacker would suffer a gruesome arm injury that would sideline him for the final seven weeks.
Despite his injury and the fact he turns 30-years-old in March, the Ravens should definitely consider adding him to the roster. Compared to other linebackers in free agency, Trevathan could likely be had for a cheaper price.
As previously mentioned, Schobert, Martinez, and Littleton could all garner expensive contracts in free agency. In the current climate for inside linebackers, all of them will easily net at least $12 million annually.
In contrast, Trevathan’s previous contract with the Bears was worth $28 million over four years. It’s likely that the Ravens could sign him for around the same price — or even less.
At the same time, he would provide the Ravens with some consistency at the inside linebacker position. Pairing him with L.J. Fort would give Baltimore some stability for next season. Along with signing Trevathan, it wouldn’t be an awful idea to draft someone with the intent to develop them.
Of course, teams are concerned with Trevathan’s recent injury history as he’s missed 18 games in the last four years. But when he’s healthy, he is a linebacker that is formidable against the run and excels in pass coverage. Those are two aspects that should cause the Ravens to express interest in Trevathan this offseason.
